10 Essential Questions to Ask Before Hiring an Electrician in Canada

Electrical work is among the most regulated — and most dangerous — trades in Canada. Hiring the wrong person can result in house fires, failed inspections, voided insurance, and serious injury. Before you let anyone touch your home's wiring, ask these ten questions.

1. Are You Licensed in This Province?

Every province requires electricians to be licensed. In Ontario, they must be registered with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). In Alberta, they need a Journeyman Electrician certificate from AIT. In BC, they must hold a certificate from SkilledTradesBC. Ask for the licence number and verify it online before work begins.

2. Are You Licensed for Residential Work?

Some electricians are licensed for commercial work only. Residential wiring has different requirements and code specifications. Confirm the electrician is specifically qualified for residential projects if that's what you need.

3. Will You Pull the Required Permits?

In Canada, most electrical work beyond changing a light switch requires a permit. The permit process triggers an inspection — which is exactly what protects you. Any electrician who suggests skipping the permit to "save money" is a major red flag. You could face fines, difficulty selling your home, and insurance issues.

4. Do You Carry Liability Insurance and WSIB/WCB Coverage?

General liability insurance protects your home if the electrician causes damage. Workers' Compensation (WSIB in Ontario, WCB in Alberta and BC) protects you if a worker is injured on your property. Ask for certificates of insurance and verify they're current.

5. Can You Provide a Detailed Written Quote?

The quote should break down labour, materials, permit fees, and any additional charges. Beware of vague quotes that only state a total — these often lead to unexpected costs later.

6. What Is Your Experience With This Type of Work?

Panel upgrades, EV charger installations, knob-and-tube replacement, and smart home wiring are all very different jobs. Ask specifically about their experience with your type of project and how many similar jobs they've completed.

7. Do You Hold a Red Seal Certificate?

Red Seal certified electricians have passed the Interprovincial Standards exam — a higher bar than a basic provincial licence. It's not required, but it's a strong indicator of comprehensive expertise.

8. What Warranty Do You Offer on Your Work?

Reputable electricians stand behind their work. Ask what warranty covers both parts and labour, and get it in writing. A common industry standard is one to two years on workmanship.

9. Who Will Actually Do the Work?

Some companies send a licensed master electrician to quote the job, then send an apprentice to do the work. Apprentices can legally perform work under supervision, but you should know who will be on-site and whether a licensed journeyperson will be supervising.

10. How Do You Handle Unexpected Issues?

Electrical projects often uncover surprises — outdated wiring, improper previous work, or code violations. Ask the electrician how they handle scope changes: will they call you before proceeding, and will they provide a revised quote in writing?
